Audience pleasures- The main audience pleasures of a rom com movie are reliability, pleasure gained from the resolution and many more. Reliability is often the most obvious in a rom com movie this is basically when the audience feel like they can relate to the characters or the situation. Although lots of rom coms are dramatized and not completely true to real life much of the audience will be able to relate to being in some kind of relationship somewhat similar to the one in the movie. Following on from this this over dramatized 'love story' is a fantasy for much of the audience so they take pleasure in seeing this 'ideal' love story because they believe they might one day have a relationship like the one in the movie, this can be classed as escapism.  Escapism is basically when the audience escapes into the movie and feels like apart of it, this is very typical of rom coms. It could also be argued that predictability is a main audience pleasure since a lot of rom coms follow a very basic cliche plot. However this is not a bad thing when it comes to rom coms because it is this cliche plot of 'true love' that means that people enjoy the movie. The audience pleasure, pleasure from the resolution is apparent in Friends with Benefits. The ending of this movie is very cliche and sees the two main characters get back together after a very up and down friendship/relationship and end the movie as a pair.

"The chemistry between Kunis and her co-star Justin Timberlake is electric"-This is a quote from the 2011 rom com Friends with Benefits. The quote shows how the audience enjoys the relationship between the actors and creates an 'ideal' relationship for the audience to look up to. Another review that supports this assumption is from Common Sense Media and they described the chemistry between the two characters as "smooth, perfect, cracking. You actually end up giving them the benefit of the doubt despite the rom com's cliches."

Problems in categorization- One of the biggest problems with categorizing rom coms is when they do not have a cliche happy ending. The vast majority of rom coms end with a happy ending so it is very unusual when it doesnt end with two people finding love after a long time of ups and downs. The movie (500) days of summer is an example of  a movie that doesn't follow the norms of a rom com. The movie end with the two people that are expected to be living happily ever after going their separate ways. Recently there have been a lot more rom coms with same sex relationships, in the past it was very unusual to see a same sex relationship in a rom com so to see one now is a nice change. A recent example of a rom com that shows a same sex relationship is the 2018 Netflix original movie Alex Strangelove.
